How Do We Compare?

some straight talking

some straight facts

We only use the latest technologies and are really happy that we have written this in a computer framework called Laravel.

For those interested Laravel is an MVC framework that site above PHP and provides abstraction layers. It was developed by Taylor Otwell and has been further developed over 8 years, originally released in 2011.

If you want to know what an MVC framework means it is model, view controller. Wikipedia states:

"Model–View–Controller (usually known as MVC) is an architectural pattern commonly used for developing user interfaces that divides an application into three interconnected parts. This is done to separate internal representations of information from the ways information is presented to and accepted from the user. The MVC design pattern decouples these major components allowing for code reuse and parallel development. Traditionally used for desktop graphical user interfaces (GUIs), this architecture has become popular for designing web applications. Popular programming languages like JavaScript, Python, Ruby, PHP, Java, and C# have MVC frameworks that are used in web application development straight out of the box."

So how does our product compare with other website products?

  • Security - Laravel is extremely secure and has built in cross site request forgery protection (CSRF). What is that we hear you cry? Cross-site request forgery, also known as one-click attack or session riding (sometimes pronounced sea-surf) or XSRF, is a type of malicious exploit of a website where unauthorized commands are transmitted from a user that the web application trusts. It is one of the major hacking techniques. It is a way of changing passwords and affecting data. Netflix, ING Direct (illicit money transfers were made), YouTube and surprisingly McAfee were all attacked. An attacker may forge a request to log the victim into a target website using the attacker's credentials; this is known as login CSRF. Login CSRF makes various novel attacks possible; for instance, an attacker can later log into the site with his legitimate credentials and view private information like activity history that has been saved in the account. This attack has been demonstrated against Google and Yahoo. If your data is important to you this should be as well.
  • Plug Ins - Many of the "free" website building packages rely heavily on 3rd party plugins (which have a price tag attached) and naturally they are a potential security concern. We looked at some WordPress plugins to do just some of the items we do in our site and the purchase was just short of $1,000. But you also have to have support as systems like WordPress are always updating so your favourite plug in could stop everything working. Most plugins give you 6 months support on purchase and after that around 30% of the purchase price. Also you have to understand them and install them.
  • Learning Curve - One of our design was to have the shortest possible learning curve. Recently one of our clients told us the tale of using the "free" programs which resulted in him making many support phone calls. Only later did he realise these were premium numbers. He was far from being a computer novice but could not get on with any of them. He sat down with our main author and after 10 minutes he had sufficient confidence to know that this was the one for him. Another client runs a busy bar\restaurant and asked for one of our staff to take them through it. It was a 20 minute experience and they are more than happy and competent. Remember if you can fill out a form you've got it.
  • Updates - We are always improving so there are updates. If we host it for you it is done automatically (for free). If you want to host somewhere else and you have access to SSL and Composer (nearly all good hosting companies will have this and do not worry if it baffling we will explain) updating is as simple as logging in to your site via SSL and issuing the command "composer update". Nothing else to do.
  • Flexibility - It is your site, not ours. We should not be dictating how many updates you can do a month or any other such nonsense. You can turn things on or off, add at will. All via simple forms. Change what you want when you want. No amendment fees. No time lags.
  • Support - If you become a client you can communicate with us via email or online chat (during UK business hours). And you will be talking to the people that really know this product - they wrote it.
